The Prabhupāda & Śrīla Bhakti Pramode Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja

“Who all always try to find faults with Vaiṣṇavas? Those who are averse to hari bhajan, they are cheated by their external material sense organs like eyes, ears, nose, etc—which all are their only support of life, so they always try to find out some faults with Vaiṣṇavas. To try to prove that I am much more important personality than other Vaiṣṇavas [those who all are eternal parṣads of Śrīla Prabhupāda, I mean those eternal members of Sri Gaudiya Matha] is not at all bhakti, this can only prove abhakti.”

(From Upadeśāmṛta of Prabhupāda)

“I have one German Godbrother—Sadānanda prabhu. He was very learned. He would stay up all night translating the word of śāstras of Prabhupāda in German. We should have such determination.

Nobody can speak on the Bhagavad-gita so authoritatively as I can do. That is a fact. So if the university wants to take advantage of this opportunity, even in this old age I can go from one university to another, and I am sure they can learn from me only the true teachings of the Bhagavad-gita; from me and from my students who are already trained up in this connection. So, if something can be done in this
connection, it will help our missionary
propaganda, and the students shall get new light from our book, Bhagavad-gita As It Is."

(Letter to Brahmananda written from Los Angeles)

"I am very, very much pleased to hear about the progress in Mayapur, and this working with one hundred men both day and night is the American style. If you do something wonderful at Mayapur that will be my credit and I can truly be called the guru of the Americans. But if you do not do anything there, then that will be a great discredit for me and I will not defeat my Godbrothers as I desire. So practically I am depending completely upon you in both these cases to finish up the Mayapur business in grand style and to get a good start in Vrindaban. That will be very much to your credit."

(Letter to Tamala Krishna written from London)

"If you make it a first-class temple, there will be no lack of visitors for preaching, you will never even have to leave that place for preaching. And if you serve nice prasadam, the whole of India will come. So stick to our principles very rigidly, and everyone will come to see these American vaisnavas. I want that we shall excel the Chaitanya Math. They have been struggling for the last 50 years, and we shall surpass them in two years. We are working two shifts of labor: that is American style of doing things. I am very pleased if you can continue in this manner of American style. But if you do not, then I shall remain on the same level, then it is a great discredit to the Americans. But if I defeat my godbrothers, then I am worthy to be called the guru of the Americans. Even there is competition in spiritual life."

(Letter to Jayapataka written from Amsterdam)

"If you are serious to be an important assistant in our Society you should fully engage yourself in translation work, and do not mix yourself with my so-called god-brothers. As there are in Vrindaban some residents like monkeys and hogs, similarly there are many rascals in the name of Vaisnavas, be careful of them."

(Letter to Niranjana written from Hyderabad)

Prabhupāda: "Just like my Guru Mahārāja did not travel all over the world, so I have got double energy than him. So you must triple energy, four times energy than me. Then actually disciple. My Godbrothers are envious because they could not do. They could not do even half of Guru Mahārāja's work, and I am doing ten times. So therefore they are envious. So if an ordinary man like me can do ten times, you are Americans (laughs) twenty times, then you are successful."

Devotee (1): If we can do twenty times, it's only because you gave us the energy.

Prabhupāda: Yes. My blessings are there, you do it, try. Just like Guru Mahārāja gave blessings to everyone, but if they do not try, if they remain Kuñja Babu, then let him remain Kuñja Babu. What can be done? If he's satisfied only one building in Māyāpur and two buildings in Vṛndāvana, that is his only ambition. The ambition is poor."

(Room Conversation - April 02, 1972, Sydney)

"Regarding, Bon Maharaja, I am actually authority accepted by authority. In the Caitanya Caritamrta it is said, krsna sakti vina nahe nama pracar. So, now the Hare Krishna movement is world known, and learned scholars, etc. give plaudits to me as Professor Judah has. So, then why I am not authority? Nobody says Bon Swami has done it, or Vivekananda, or any other swami. There are so many yogis and swamis coming, but nobody is giving credit to them, they are giving the credit to me. So, why I am not an authority? If Krishna accepts me as authority, then who can deny it? Besides that, in 1933, Bon was given the first chance to preach Lord Caitanya's movement in London. He remained there about four years and not a single person could be converted to become a Vaisnava and he was receiving regularly 700rs. per month for his expenditure, being supported by the whole Gaudiya Math institution, and still, as he could not do anything appreciable, he was called back by Guru Maharaja. Then where is his authority? Our authority comes from Parampara system. If the Guru was not satisfied with him and called him back, and since then, he gave up connection with Gaudiya Math and started his own institution, then how he becomes authority? And in spite of all these things, if he is still authority by his own imagination, then people should ask him what he has been doing for the last 40 years, about the objective of Gaudiya Vaisnavism. Even if he thinks that he has done, certainly he has not done better than me. Under the circumstances, accepting him as an authority, I am greater and better authority than him. So, all Vaisnavas are authorities to preach Krishna Consciousness, but still, there are degrees of authorities. On the whole, if his motive is to supress me and that is why he has come here, how we can receive him? He has already given one Professor a wrong impression. He may be treated as a guest, if he comes to our center, give him prasadam, honor him as an elder Vaisnava, but he cannot speak or lecture. If he wants to lecture, you can tell him that there is already another speaker scheduled. That's all.

(Letter to Satsvarupa written from Honolulu)

"Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yadubara . . . there's one letter from Yadubara Prabhu. Actually, he was hoping to get to see you. [...] His reason for coming to India this time was to give you that film and to now make a film about India. [...] He says his general idea is that, "To present and establish Kṛṣṇa as a factual personality and not just some mythical character." To do this, he wants "to show historical sites of His pastimes combined with paintings to illustrate Kṛṣṇa's birth, His Vṛndāvana, Mathurā and Dvārakā pastimes, speaking Bhagavad-gītā to Arjuna, and His teachings as given in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Then we would show His, Kṛṣṇa's, teachings, how Kṛṣṇa's teachings were passed down . . . [...] And then to include Lord Caitanya, the Six Gosvāmīs and other great ācāryas in our line, up to Your Divine Grace, the foremost preacher of the science of Kṛṣṇa consciousness in the world today.

Prabhupāda: Very good. This is all right.

Śrī Śhyām Das Bābā

Nirmatsara sādhu (completely free of jealousy) in true sense is rare at present

Once one principal of one college situated at South Calcutta Bihalla came to take shelter unto the Lotus Feet of the great Paramahaṁsa Guru Śrī Śrīla Bhakti Pramode Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja after searching for long time. After knowing the reason for why he came to meet him, he (Śrīla Gurudeva) suggested him to take shelter of Śrīla Bhakti Kumud Santa Gosvāmī Mahārāja. He said to him that—“Why leaving the flowing Gaṅgā (Śrīla Santa Gosvāmī Mahārāja) just at your doorstep at Bihalla—you have come to take bath in a dirty pond like me! You must go and take shelter unto His Lotus Feet, I am just unfit to act as guru.”

Now just try to imagine the humbleness (tṛṇād api sunīcena bhava) of the great eternal parṣad of Śrīla Prabhupāda, who was very very senior to his younger Godbrother Śrīla Bhakti Kumud Santa Gosvāmī Mahārāja, not only that but also he was brought by Śrīla Bhakti Pramode Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja from his previous home at Midnapur Keshari (West Bengal).
